A representative or regional office lets a foreign company establish a presence in Malaysia for market research and coordination — without carrying out commercial activity.

What a representative office can do

  • Gather information on investment and business opportunities in Malaysia and the region.
  • Identify suppliers, components and sources of raw materials.
  • Carry out research and development and market research.
  • Coordinate the parent company’s affiliates, agents and subsidiaries in the region.

    • What it cannot do

    A representative office may not trade, import or export, sign commercial contracts on behalf of the parent, or otherwise earn income in Malaysia. Approval, duration and minimum operating expenditure are set by the authorities case by case.
